PLAY STNDBRG
a tragedy turned comedy

Strindberg according to Munch

Manuscript loosely based on F. Durrenmatts PLAY STRINDBERG (1968) which is again a rewrite of A. Strindbergs DØDSDANSEN (1900). The classic triangular drama is attacked and delivered with a sure feeling for style and pace.

The performance is adapted and produced by !bang, alias Klovholt and Wiggen.

The performance opened 15. September 1998 with the title SPILL STINDBERG, at the Black Box Theatre in Oslo with guest performances at The theatre Garage in Bergen early October same year. During spring 1999 it played at The Theaterhouse Avant Garden in Trondheim and the Central Theatre (placed under the City theater of Oslo). It was one of the main features of the Festival Strindberg in Stockholm late August 1999. It also toured A-level schools in the south of Norway during the autumn of 1999.

The production is funded by a grant from The Norwegian Cultural Council, Fund for Performing Artists, The City of Oslo (department of culture), the Actors Guild of Norway, the Strinberg Society in Stockholm Sweden, and Norsk Scenekunstbruk (touring management). We are grateful for the support from and access to the facilities of The National Theatre of Norway by Artistic Director Ellen Horn.

"Marriage is the only war in which you sleep with the enemy."

Woody Allen

"... when man and wife, which is usually the case, have taken on the
superficial commitment to spend all their lives together, only to be hating each
other within two months, wanting a divorce but staying together, that is
when all hell breaks loose. They drink, shoot themselves, kill and
poison themselves and each other.''

Leo Tolstoj “Anna Karenina”

Edgar and Alice are leading an isolated life on a small island. Tonight the island doctor is giving a party. The couple is not invited.

Edgar: ``They are a community of fools. Rabble!''
Alice: ``That is what you say about all people''
Edgar: ``That is because all people are.''
Alice: ``Apart from you.''

Thus they are left to each others company in which they take on the roles in their matrimonial play: The battle against eachother. Eventually they have a visitor, Alices cousin Kurt. He is taken in with open tentacles. Hence, the stage is set for an unforgetable evening, a triangular drama of sorts. The couple take turns in conspiring with Kurt in the battle against each other. All measures are fair in order to reach that final round. But do they have the balls to go the distance?

We have here traditionally trained actors acting out their parts in the prevailing theatrical form of psychological realism. In a naked room on-stage, they act out their profession - prostitution and foul play.
